In a recent tweet, Google confirmed an algorithm update that began rolling out to local search results from 30th November and ran through December 8th.
This update involved rebalancing factors considered in generating local search results. The update is officially referred to as the November 2021 local search update. Changes wouldn’t have been felt until the first week of December.
To improve your business’s local ranking, use Google Business Profile to claim and update your business information. Make sure you keep your information up to date as your business changes.
According to Google:
Update your business info for better visibility
For your business to appear on relevant searches in your area, ensure that your business information in Business Profile is accurate, complete, and engaging.
Edit business information for 10 or more locations at once.
- Enter complete data: so users know what you do, where you are, and when they can visit.
- Verify locations: so they’re more likely to show in local search results.
- Keep your hours accurate: lets shoppers know when you’re available and gives them confidence.
- Manage and respond to reviews: it shows that you value your customers and their feedback.
- Add photos: Accurate and appealing pictures may also show shoppers that your business offers what they’re searching for.
How Google determines local ranking
- Relevance: how well a local Business Profile matches what someone is searching for.
- Distance: how far each potential search result is from the location term used in a search.
- Prominence: how well known a business is
Note: Google never gives exact details regarding the weight of each ranking factor. So perhaps the best way to respond to this update is to rebalance your efforts.
